Red and Green have long since been recognised as the traditional Christmas colours but have you ever wondered why? It seems that there are several different explanations but there are two which are the most popular and accepted reasons for the colours.

The first explanation, which is itself split into two reasons for the green, is that the colours represent Christ. In around the 4th Century, at the time when 25th December started to be celebrated as remembering the birth of Christ, Christians who had adorned their homes with wreaths of holly for the Winter Solstice, just left thew wreaths to decorate their homes through Christmas as well. Thus the colour green and wreaths of holly became associated with the birth of Christ.

If green represents the birth of Christ, red represents the blood of Christ and his death. People at this time also took to adding red berries to their green wreaths of holly. Thus red and green has become associated with the celebrations of Christ's birth, death, and rising from the dead.

Remaining with the explanation that red and green represent the colours of Christ, the other explanation for the colour green is that it represents the eternal hope and the potential for everlasting life that Jesus sacrifice made possible. This is represented by the Evergreen tree which itself is always green and which therefore represents life all year round.

The second explanation for the colours is more historical. During the 1300s when vast numbers of the local populations were illiterate, churches would often put on Miracle plays in order to help teach their learning. The Paradise Play, which was presented on December 24th, related the story of Adam and Eve and their plight in the Garden of Eden. Props were needed, and since there was no way to provide an apple tree in the middle of winter, it was decided that a pine tree with apples tied to its branches, would serve as the Tree of Good and Evil. This became a popular prop for local churches and was used wherever the play was performed. Soon churches everywhere had adopted this tradition and included it in their celebrations each year.The Paradise tree was so popular in Germany that private citizens began to erect pine trees in their homes during the holidays, decorating them with red apples. Before long the tradition was so widespread that the modern day Christmas Tree tradition was born and the official colours of the Christmas season became green and red.

To the Person who stole the above Bracelet from my Market Stall,

Did you really think about what you were doing when you took the bracelet, did you really know what it meant? You weren't stealing from some retail chain with faceless shareholders who can afford to write off the loss, not that stealing from large stores is right, its still illegal. No, you were stealing from me, from my pocket, you might just as well have stolen the money right out from my purse, and no, I don't have a big bank account that can afford to absorb the loss without noticing it.

Actually truth be told, saying it is as bad as stealing from my purse is not quite true, it is actually worse. Have you considered the time and effort that I put into designing and making that bracelet? Hasn't it occurred to you, that in common with many other designers and hand-crafters, I put my heart and soul into creating my pieces, they are all made with love. That is what you stole, a piece of my heart-felt creativity.

This bracelet was a one off design, it was special and it was meant to make the wearer feel special. Just how special do you think you can feel wearing it knowing that it was obtained illegally? I could of course recreate the design but it wouldn't be the same - it would no longer be a unique piece. I could no longer assure someone that they were obtaining a one-off.

Maybe of course, given the time of year it is, you have stolen the bracelet to give to someone else. That would be even worse. Do you really want to draw an innocent person into being complicit in your crime? Receiving and handling stolen pieces is just as illegal as stealing them. So where would be the joy in that type of giving?

So at the end of the day, you didn't steal just a bracelet, you stole a piece of me, and I can only hope that in doing so you lost a piece of yourself.

Fluorite is a mineral composed of Calcium Fluoride. It often occurs as a vein deposit, especially with metallic minerals. Originally known as Fluorspar, the name Fluorite derives from the Latin root "Fluo" meaning "to flow". Many samples of Fluorite exhibit fluorescence under ultra-violet light, a property that takes its name from fluorite. The visible light transmitted with fluorite is most commonly blue.

A fairly soft stone, Fluorite is known as the "Most Colourful Mineral in the World". The most common colours are purple, green, blue and yellow but Fluorite can also be found in pink, red, white, brown, black and nearly every shade in between. Many specimens of fluorite have a single colour, but a significant percentage of fluorite's have multiple colours, and the colours are arranged in bands or zones.

Fluorite can be found and mined in many countries including Argentina, Austria, Canada, China, England, France, Germany, Mexico, Morocco, Myanmar, Namibia, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and the United States.

Ancient Romans believed that drinking alcoholic beverages from vessels carved of fluorite prevented drunkenness. During the eighteenth century fluorite was ground into powder and mixed with water to treat kidney disease. Many people believe fluorite has a calming effect on the body.

A to Z of Gemstones - E is for Emerald

Emeralds are fascinating gemstones with the most beautiful, intense colour of green that can be imagined. They are a variety of the mineral beryl coloured green by trace amounts of chromium. The name Emerald comes from the Greek "smargados" via the Old French "esmeralde" and really just means "green gemstone".

Rated 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs Scale of Hardness, good quality emeralds are fairly rare with inclusions often marring the evenness of the colour. Fine inclusions however do not diminish the high regard in which Emeralds are held. On the contrary, even with inclusions, an emerald in a deep, lively colour still has a much higher value than an almost flawless emerald whose colour is paler.

Probably the oldest known finds of Emeralds were made near the Red Sea in Egypt, however, these mines, exploited by Egyptian Pharaohs between 300 and 1500BC and once known as Cleopatra's mines, had already been exhausted by the time they were rediscovered in the early 19th century. Today Columbia is known as the major source for the world's emeralds although emeralds are also mined in other countries, such as Zambia, Brazil, Zimbabwe, Madagascar, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and India.

The Incas and Aztecs of South America regarded the Emerald as a holy stone, while the Holy Scriptures of the Indians, the Vedas, states "Emeralds promise good luck.." and "the emerald enhances the well being..". The emerald is also the sacred stone of the goddess Venus and is thought to preserve love. It is also considered a symbol of hope.

BrisStyle Indie Designers Market - Dec 10th

I'm getting excited with the countdown now on to my two last markets of the year. The first of those is the BrisStyle Indie Designers Market, on this Saturday. I'm busy trying to make sure everything is ready, although knowing me it will all turn into a last minute rush as per usual. I have however managed to stock up on my range of V Style Earrings, and I have also pulled out a few pieces of copper jewellery to add to my usual stocks of sterling silver and 14k gold-fill jewellery. Sunday Theme - Bali Silver

Bali Silver is sterling silver made on the island of Bali, in Indonesia. The Balinese are highly skilled silversmiths, known for their granulation and wire work decoration.

Genuine Bali Silver is made entirely by hand, starting with the weighing, melting and mixing of the 92.5%silver and 7.5% copper to form sterling silver. The silver and copper are heated with a simple torch, attached to a bottle of gasoline with simple tubing. A foot pumped bellows adds the needed air. Molten silver is poured into small wooden molds. Once cool the silver is put through a rolling mill cranked by hand. The worker tightens down the rollers after each pass to make the silver thinner and thinner until the desired thickness is reached.

The silver sheeting is cut to size for making beads with two halves then hammered into semi-circular indentations on a brass block. The two halves are then sanded and soldered together. Wire and tiny granulations (snippets of wire torched into balls) are then used to decorate the beads. They are applied to the bead with a natural glue and then a solution of silver, copper and water is brushed over the bead. The entire bead is carefully heated with the torch to complete the process.To emphasise the decoration, Bali beads are typically oxidised with the raised part then polished which gives a dark background highlighting the shiny silver pattern.

Each Bali bead and finding is made one by one with patience and skill. It is a time-consuming process with element hand made from start to finish. With every piece of the pattern on a bead made and attached separately it means that each bead and finding is unique.

A to Z of Gemstones - D is for Danburite

One of the lesser known gemstone, and truth to tell one I had never previously heard of is Danburite. Danburite, a calcium boric silicate was first discovered in 1839 in Danbury, Connecticut. Danburite was discovered by Charles Shepherd, an eminent American mineralogist.

Danburite, a quite hard stone, is usually colourless to very light pink in colour, but some deposits may produce specimens in shades of light yellow or brown. Danburite is known for its excellent transparency and clarity. Because of its high refractive index, well cut danburites are remarkably bright and can look something like diamonds.

The original discovered deposits of Danburite have long since been buried under an expanding city. Today Danburite deposits are found in Japan, Madagascar, Mexico and Burma, with Mexico considered the most important source of gemstone quality Danburite.

With December 1st, the official start of Summer here in Australia, just a few days away, this seemed the perfect theme for this week.

Summer is the warmest of the four seasons where the days are at their longest and the nights their shortest. It is the season that signifies the long school holidays, days at the beach, and down here in Australia, absolutely sweltering weather. Here in Queensland Summer also signifies the wet season, and of course, who could forget the floods that resulted from that last year.

Of course, here in the Southern Hemisphere, Summer also means Christmas, some thing that still doesn't seem quite right to me even after living here for 11 years.

A to Z of Gemstones - C is for Charoite

Charoite is an unusual and rare mineral named after the Chara River in Siberia, Russia. It was discovered by the Russians in the 1940s but was not made known to the Western world until 1978. Charoite is formed from alteration of limestones by the close presence of an alkali-rich nephline syenite intrusion.

Charoite's colour ranges from lilac to violet to purple but its the unusual patterns that are found in Charoite that are its distinctive signature. Described as unnaturally beautiful Charoite has such a unique and attractive swirling violet colour that specimens of it are sometimes thought to be synthetic rather than natural.

Charoite is mined exclusively near in the Chara River area of Siberia, Russia, a part of Russia known for its forbidden climate and terrain.

A to Z of Gemstones - B is for Bronzite

Bronzite is an unusual gemstone that wouldn't be considered a gem at all if not for two other related stones called Hypersthene and Enstatite. All three of these are members of an igneous group of rocks called orthopyroxenes. Like its family members Bronzite is a stone that is constructed of different rocks including peridot and serpentine. All have key elements of iron as does Bronzite itself.

A reasonably hard stone Bronzite is generally a mixture of the colours of gold, green, brown, and black, although the most popular varieties of the gem are bronze brown as the stone's name indicates. The best rough of the gem also has the cats eye effect called chatoyancy. The stone often also refracts golden metallic sparkles and streaks from within.

Today Bronzite can be found in areas of the USA, Austria, England, South Africa, India, Labrador, Norway and Greenland.

Ancient Romans used to grind Bronzite into powder form to use as protection against mental illness and confusion and as an effective treatment to strengthen the nerves.

Creating Music

Craft is one form of expressing creativity - however, there are of course many different ways in which to be creative, of which one of the major is in creating music.

As any of you who have followed my blog for a while will know I play the violin, and for several years I was involved in playing with a couple of local amateur/community orchestras, first in England and then here in Brisbane.

In the UK I played for several years with the Slough Philharmonic Orchestra. They enjoyed an enviable reputation as one of the best musical societies in the country, not least because the society included a choir as well as an orchestra. I loved my time playing with the orchestra and learned many new orchestral pieces with them including what is now one of my all time classical pieces - the Gadfly by Shostakovitch. The society usually put on five concerts a year, three orchestral and two with the choir. If you live in the UK anywhere near to Slough then I can well recommend them. The only reason I left playing with the Slough Philharmonic was because I moved to Australia.

For the first few years of living in Australia, I joined and played with the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra, although at that time it was known as the Brisbane Sinfonia. Although a much newer orchestra than my UK orchestra the Brisbane Symphony was gradually gaining a very good reputation for the standard of their concerts. Again, I really loved playing with them and can certainly recommend paying one of their concerts a visit. Unfortunately I just found it too difficult to continue with my commitment to them at the time I left having got a job in the wrong direction from Brisbane from where I lived.

From playing in both orchestra one thing I will never forget is the thrill of playing at the concerts being surrounded by a large symphonic sound and knowing that I was a part of it.

A to Z of Gemstones - A is for Amazonite

Its time to start a new A to Z series, and this time I am going to feature gemstones, one per letter, lets see how many letters I manage to complete this time!

Amazonite is a beautiful blue/green gemstone named after the Amazon River in Brazil, although no deposits have actually been found there. In terms of properties Amazonite is a gemstone variety of green microcline, a feldspar mineral. Often cut as a cabochon, a good quality Amazonite can be mistaken for Jade. Amazonite is a fairly soft stone that can be scratched by other stones so good care should always be taken of it.

The colour of Amazonite can vary from green, to yellow-green, to blue-green. The colour distribution is generally irregular and some stones can exhibit fine white streaks.

The most important deposits of Amazonite are found in Colorado, however Amazonite can also be found in Brazil, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia, Russia and Zimbabwe.

Romantics claim that the beautiful greens of the Amazon jungle are reflected in the stone that bears its name. A Brazilian legend tells that the Amazons, a legendary group of female warriors, gave green stones to the men who visited them. Amazonite is said to calm ones emotions and soothe nerves, and to enhance creativity and the ability to express oneself.

Lavender Lampwork and Chrome Diopside Earrings

Sometimes things just don't go according to plan - and that's exactly what happened when I was designing a piece of jewellery to showcase three absolutely gorgeous Lavender Lampwork beads by Lavender Beads. My initial design plan had been a necklace with a "vine" created from wires as the base of the necklace, a few wire shaped leaves with some Chrome Diopside, and the lavender beads. I wasn't terribly happy with how it was going, but it all came crashing down completely when, in hammering the wires, I accidentally caught the edge of one of the lavender beads - Disaster!

So, suddenly only having two beads I could still use it was back to the drawing board. I didn't however totally discard the idea of a vine as this still appealed. Knowing that just two beads wouldn't really provide the right balance for a necklace, I decided to focus on coming up with a design for earrings. The priority was still obviously to focus on showcasing the beads.

Thinking through the idea of a vine I therefore decided that I could use my "vine" base to provide a loop around the lavender beads. I therefore twisted two wires together in a circle shape, deliberately making the twist uneven to enhance the idea of two stems wrapping themselves around each other, and then drew them down the centre of the loop for the lavender beads. I still also liked my original idea of using my gemstone Chrome Diopside beads, as I felt their glorious green colour would provide a perfect foil to the lavender. I realised that wrapping these beads around the loop would actually enhance the impression of a vine, effectively giving me a green vine. My Lavender and Vine loops were then suspended on hand forged ear wires to complete the earrings.

So from a disaster of a necklace that never ended up happening, I ended up with my beautiful Lavender and Chrome Diopside Earrings.

Sunday Theme - Swarovski Crystals

Swarovski is the brand name for a range of precisely cut crystal and related luxury products. The Swarovski company was founded in 1895 in Austria and its current logo of a swan is well known. The Swarovski range includes jewelry and couture, home decor and chandeliers, but probably Swarovski is most known for its sculptures and miniatures which are collected world wide. One such example is the small black sheep known as Shady, pictured above, which I am lucky enough to own.

There is a subsidiary of the main Swarovski company know as Swarovski Elements and it is this subsidiary that it just as renowned as the parent company amongst jewellery makers, because it makes a huge range of crystal beads and pendants in an amazing variety of colours. These crystals are great favourites with jewellery designers because of their high quality and huge range.

BrisStyle Eco Market - Saturday 12th November

The BrisStyle Eco Market takes place this Saturday and I am very excited to be taking part in it for the first time. Having established that all the round silver wire I purchase, although for some reason not the square, is ECO friendly recycled silver, I will be bringing along a selection of my jewellery that is made with the round wire.

This market however, is about more than just handmade, upcycled and recycled treasures - although there will certainly be plenty of those available. This market also has a place for seconds, vintage and destash. and believe me, I have plenty of destash. So, as well as my jewellery, I will also be bringing along a great selection of beads, as well as a few other crafty destash items.

There will also be several workshops being run by various stallholders throughout the course of the market - so this market is definitely not one to miss. Hope to see you there!

Crystal Filled Sterling Viking Bracelet

Having previously completed a "filled" viking chain bracelet as part of a Beading Forum Challenge, using supplied glass beads, I wanted to revisit the idea of filling a viking chain, only this time using the sort of materials that I usually work with, in this case Swarovski Crystals.

The key difference between this viking chain and the other viking chains that I normally do is that this time I had to work in a 'single knit' weave, as opposed to my normal 'double knit', in order to create a lacy enough effect that the beads could be seen to sparkle through.

I had a supply of 2.5mm round Swarovski crystals which I felt would be perfect for this sort of design. Unfortunately, on my first attempt, the holes in the weave ended up too big for the crystals and they just fell through them. That chain is still sitting uncompleted with my materials. Introducing more 'stitches' into each round gave me the desired effect and my 2nd chain was just right.

I therefore fastened one end securely, filled the chain with as many crystals as I could, initially trialling with blue but finally settling on hyacinth, and then fastened the other end before fitting each end with some lovely petal shaped bead caps. The bracelet was then completed with a round silver star dust magnetic clasp.

So here then is the finished design, my Crystal Filled Sterling Viking Bracelet.

The word "vintage" was originally used purely in relation to the wine industry with the word derived from the Latin "vinum" which means "wine" and "demere" - "to take off". Today the word "vintage" can be used to describe practically anything that is at least 20 years old, as opposed to "antique" which needs to be at least 100 years old.

November Birthstone - Citrine

The birthstone for November is the lovely yellow coloured gemstone Citrine. Citrine is the yellow to orange variety of quartz and is one of the few yellow coloured gemstones that there is. These days totally natural citrine is fairly rare with most citrine actually being heat treated amethyst. The name Citrine is derived from the citron, a yellow coloured citrus fruit and the word citron actually means yellow in several languages. The anniversary stone for the 17th year of marriage, Citrine symbolises light-heartedness, joy and happiness.

I was very excited over the weekend to drive up to the Sunshine Coast and to stock up my space within the new Handmade/Designer retailer Evelyn Lily. Based in Buderim Evelyn Lily is the latest retailer specialising in providing space for designers to sell their wares in a shop.

The shop itself has a lovely light airy feel to it, and my only disappointment was that as one of the first designers to stock their space it meant that I was unable to see the completion of all the other spaces. I love the set up though as well as my own space, on a gorgeous shelf unit right in front of the window.

After the opening night that was enjoyed by all who could make it tonight, the shop will be open to the public from tomorrow morning. So if you are up on the Sunshine Coast, pop in and enjoy all the handmade goodness.

Sunday Theme - Halloween

What more suitable theme for this Sunday than Halloween, celebrated worldwide on the 31st October. Halloween is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III designated November 1 as a time to honor all saints and martyrs; the holiday, All Saints’ Day, incorporated some of the traditions of Samhain. The evening before was known as All Hallows’ Eve and later Halloween. Over time, Halloween evolved into a secular, community-based event characterized by child-friendly activities such as trick-or-treating.

Twilight Market Pod Partners

It used to be that you should never mix your metals when wearing jewellery - you either wore silver or you wore gold - but you never, ever, wore the two together. I can certainly remember being told that when I was younger.

Well, times have changed. These days, it is perfectly acceptable to wear more than one metal at the same time, in fact it is one of today's modern trends. More than that, these days there are some great jewellery designs that incorporate more than one metal into the same piece of jewellery. My Stripy Silver and Gold Viking Weave Bangle, pictured above, is one example. This mixes Sterling Silver and 14k Gold.

Sunday Theme - Spring

We're in the middle of Spring here in Australia so it seemed a good time to make this my theme of the week. Spring is the season of new beginnings, evidenced of course by the rebirth of the plant life that sleeps during Winter, as well as new births in the animal kingdom. Spring, by the same token, is also the time of all things fresh, of saying goodbye to the old and hello to the new, of making a fresh start. Who doesn't remember their parents giving the house a spring clean each year!

I have a few pieces that speak Spring to me, but I think the piece that really makes me think of Spring is my Green Gemstone Charm Bracelet, pictured above. The varying shades of green from the different gemstones and crystals give the bracelet such a fresh, bright look that really screams Spring.

October Birthstone - Opal

The Opal is one of the most lustrous and radiant of gems, and certainly one of my favourites. The ever changing iridescence and flashes of colour that you see in opals is always so beautiful.

The ancient Greeks upheld the opal as a sign of purity and hope, while the ancient Romans believed the opal kept the wearer safe from harm. For thousands of years opals have been regarded as a source of imparting inner beauty and faithfulness to the wearer.

The romance of opals is legendary. Cleopatra is said to have worn opals to attract Mark Anthony, Queen Victoria was a passionate collector, opals were set in the crowns and necklaces of rulers who believed in their protective powers, and Aborigines believe in the spiritual value of opals, believing they represent the sign or presence of an ancestor.

Lemon Chrysoprase and Sterling Silver Earrings

Most of the time when I am working with cabochons I use them to either make rings or pendants. So I decided it was about time I made some more earrings with them. I had this gorgeous pair of lemon coloured chrysoprase and decided they would fit the bill perfectly.

As when making pendants, I securely wrapped the cabochons in sterling silver wire, bringing the wires up to the top of the stone. I then made a small bail from which to hang the stones, and then gathered the wires on one side to sweep around and fan out across the stone.

Of course the major difficulty with earrings, as opposed to pendants, is that you need to make two the same, or at least, two that are a mirror image of each other. Trying to get the stages exactly the same in terms of sizing etc. can really be a challenge and use of the ruler is unavoidable. Actually that's probably why the earrings don't happen as often as the pendants!

So anyway, there you have it, my Lemon Chrysoprase and Sterling Silver Earrings.

I was delighted to hear this week that my assistant from work had just given birth to her first baby, a fine baby boy. Therefore it seemed only fitting this week to have 'baby' as my theme in their honour.

I'm sure that many handmade items can be found in relation to babies, even though my own jewellery doesn't fit this theme. Okay I admit it, these letters stumped me. I did think of Yarn for the letter Y, and of course there is plenty of handmade yarn out there. The trouble is the actual craft of making yarn is called weaving.

So, after failing to come up with crafts representing these letters, I instead decided that a fun way to end the series would be to instead come up with three handmade items that quite literally represented the letters.

Woodworking is the process of building, carving, or making something using wood.

Along with stone, mud, and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Since Neolithic times carved wooden vessels are known. Examples of Bronze Age wood carving include tree trunks worked into coffins and wooden folding chairs. Germany provides fine examples of wooden animal statues from the Iron Age.

Two ancient civilisations that used woodworking were the Egyptians and the Chinese. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings, and a considerable amount of ancient Egyptian furniture has been preserved in tombs.

Historically, woodworkers relied upon the woods native to their region, until transportation and trade innovations made more exotic woods available to the craftsmen. Woods can be sorted into three basic types: hardwoods typified by tight grain and derived from broadleaf trees, softwoods from coniferous trees, and man-made materials such as plywood and MDF.

TIME Fashion Show

I was thrilled to be asked a few weeks ago if I would be willing to take part in the TIME Fashion Show on the 28th September. One of two jewellery designers taking part, along with several fashion designers, my jewellery will be featured in one "scene" of the fashion show, modeled by six models who will all be wearing black in order to showcase the jewellery.

TIME is a charity set up by medical students at the University of Queensland - it stands for Towards International Medical Equality. It is a student run organisation, established in 2005, that is committed to the promotion and establishment of equitable health care at home and abroad. Please visit their website for more details.

The Fashion Show is held as a fund raiser for TIME while at the same time promoting local designers. Details of the event can be found on the facebook page, and tickets are available here. It would be great to see as many of you as possible!

Yesterday was a pre-show photo shoot held at the Botanic Gardens in Brisbane. I was able to meet the organisers for the first time and see my jewellery being modelled by six gorgeous students. Unfortunately I missed seeing the actual shots being taken because by the time I was handing out the jewellery to the sixth model the first was handing hers back. I'm therefore now eagerly waiting to see some of the photos and will try to share one or two when I can.

Sunday Theme - Violin

After having included violin makers in my 'A to Z of Craft' series, and being a violinist myself, it seemed a good choice to have a violin craft theme this week.

I started to play the violin when I was eight years old, beginning with lessons at school and then moving to private lessons when I went up to high school. I went through all the music grades of violin exams finally getting my grade 8 when I was 18. Learning to play the violin gave me a really good introduction to classical music. This was especially the case when I started playing in orchestras. I started out in the junior orchestras and then played for several years in two amateur orchestras, first back in England and then in Brisbane.

As with many items, the violin is a theme often used in handmade arts and crafts. A great example is the print pictured above - "Wild Gypsy Air" by Emily Balivet. I am the proud owner of one of these prints, having fallen in love with it as soon as I saw it.

A to Z of Crafts - V = Violin Making

As someone who not only plays the violin and owns a violin that was made in London in 1900 by a German violin maker, but who also studied the history of the violin as part of my college course, this topic held special interest.

Making an instrument of the violin family may be done in different ways, many of which have change very little in 500 years since the first violins were made. Hand made violins, called "bench-made" instruments, are made by a single individual, either a master worker, or an amateur working alone.

The violin first emerged in Northern Italy in the early 16th century. From 1530 the word violin appears in Brescian documents and spread all round north of Italy. while no instruments from the first decades of the century survive, there are several representations in paintings.

The oldest confirmed surviving violin, dated inside, in the "Charles IX" by Andrea Amati made in Cremona in 1564. Of course, the most famous of the old 'master' violin makers is Antonio Stradivari, although there are also several other "old masters". These days, many violin makers use the outlines of one of the old masters when crafting their violins.

Okay, so maybe I've taken a bit of poetic license on this one but given the huge variety of handmade items that are available, all upcycled items, I believe it is a valid "craft" to include.

So what is upcycling? Upcycling is defined as the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality. This is as opposed to downcycling where the new products are of a lesser value than the original. The term recycling covers both.

The first recorded use of the term upcycling was by Reiner Pilz of Pilz GmbH in an interview in 1994. Talking about the impending EU demolition directive he stated "Recycling - I call it downcycling. They smash bricks, they smash everything. What we need is upcycling where old products are given more value not less".

Black Rutilated Quartz and Crystal Earrings

I was fascinated by rutilated quartz the first time I saw a picture of it. It was actually on a group buy and some others had purchased the stones. I was determined that at some time I had to get some for myself to work with. What fascinated me where the needle like strands of another colour, the 'rutile', interweaving themselves through the centre of the clear quartz.

Well, I finally purchased some black rutilated quartz briolettes. They have a faceted cut so not only do they show of the black strands within the stone but they also capture the light beautifully. I decided to team them with two colours of Swarovski crystal, some Jet to highlight the black rutile strands and some crystal satin. The briolettes are wrapped in sterling silver wire and the crystals have been set on hand forged balled head pins. All stones are gathered together on jump rings and then suspended from hand forged ear wires.

So that is it - my Black Rutilated Quartz and Crystal Earrings - I hope that you too fall in love with these fascinating stones.

September Birthstone - Sapphire

The birthstone for September is the gorgeous precious stone Sapphire. Throughout history sapphire symbolises truth, sincerity and faithfulness in relationships, and to bring peace, joy, and wisdom to the owner and wearer. In the past the sapphire was also believed to be a talisman that would protect you against evil spirits and other unsavoury creatures of the night. The ancients regarded star sapphires as a powerful talisman protecting travellers and seekers.

While blue is the traditional and most popular sapphire colour, sapphires are actually found in a wide range of colours including pink, purple, yellow and green. Large sapphires are rare and often attract fame and myth. Some of the world's mot famous sapphires include the Star of India, the Logan Sapphire, the Midnight Star and the Star of India.

It was great to receive the newsletter from MadeIt a few days ago letting us know of the updates to the site. Two of the updates that I was really pleased about were the opportunity to create your own categories for your shop, as opposed to having all your categories determined by your listing categories, and also the ability to determine the order that the items in your shop are listed. I therefore spent some time today editing all my items into my newly created categories, and then sorting out the order that I wanted items to show - well, on the front page anyway. I think it all makes my MadeIt shop look much better and more organised.

Tatting is a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops. Tatting can be used to make lace edging, as well as doilies, collars and other decorative pieces. The lace is formed by a pattern of rings and chains formed from a series of cow hitch or half hitch knots over a core thread. The term for tatting in most European languages is derived from French frivolité, which refers to the purely decorative nature produced by this technique.

All of the available evidence shows that tatting originated in the early 19th century. As most fashion and home economics magazines from the first half of the 20th century attest, tatting had a substantial following. When fashion included feminine touches such as lace collars and cuffs, and inexpensive yet nice baby shower gifts were needed, this creative art flourished.

Modern day tatters are innovative and creative and every day new tatting techniques are created.

The term stained glass can refer to coloured glass as a material or to works produced from it. Although traditionally the term was predominantly applied to windows in churches and other significant buildings the creations of modern stained glass artists also include sculptures and other items.

Coloured glass has been produced since ancient times. Both the Egyptians and the Romans excelled at the manufacture of small coloured glass objects. Evidence of stained glass windows in churches and monasteries in Great Britain can be found as early as the 7th century.

Stained glass as an art form reached its height in the Middle Ages when it became a major pictorial form and was used to illustrate the narratives of the Bible. Stained glass as an art form saw a revival in the 19th century with new techniques added to the more traditional techniques. The copper foil method was invented as an alternative to lead and saw stained glass evolve into sculptures and other decorative items as opposed to just windows. Artists sought to transform an ancient art form into a contemporary one exploring the medium of glass in different ways.

Sunday Theme - White

White is a colour the perception of which is evoked by light. Since white is the extreme end of the visual spectrum, and since white objects such as snow, clouds and flowers, appear often in nature, it has frequent symbolism. Human culture has many references to white, often related to purity and cleanness.

Snow and ice are normally white due to the diffusing structure of transparent water ice crystals. The same is true for many types of clouds where droplets of water diffuse the white light from the sun. Beaches with sand containing large amounts of quartz also appear white.

White is frequently associated with both purity and peace. This symbolism has long roots as seen by the white dove emerging from Noah's ark. The white ribbon is worn by movements denouncing violence against women and the White Rose was a non violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. The White flag is an International sign of either surrender or truce, that is, it is a sign of peaceful intent.

In Western weddings, a white dress is thought to be symbolic of purity. In Japanese weddings white is thought to symbolise the "death" of their former family and their introduction into a new family. In English heraldry white symbolised brightness, purity, virtue and innocence.

Of course the colour white is frequently used in craft, both as the only or dominant colour and also as a complimentary or contrasting colour. My Sterling and White Crystal Wired Watch pictured above is a great example of white being used as the only or dominant colour.

When I saw these beautiful bi-coloured Quartz briolettes for sale I just couldn't resist them. I had never seen such distinct two colours in one stone before and thought it was pretty special.

When it came to deciding what to team the quartz up with when making some earrings with them, the olivine coloured Swarovski crystals was the obvious choice, with olivine being such a good blend of colour between green and yellow. I therefore wirewrapped the Quartz briolettes in sterling silver, set the crystals on hand balled sterling head pins, and set the lot on jump rings suspended from hand forged ear wires. So, my Yellow and Green Bi-Coloured Quartz Earrings were complete.

Rug Making is one of the oldest crafts known and can be traced back through the ages to various civilisations. The oldest found rug, found largely intact due to being encased in ice, has been dated to the 5th century BC.

It is believed that various Eurasian, Mongolian and Siberian first engaged in rug making thousands of years ago. As shepherds, the nomads experimented with wool for rug making and these rugs replaced animal skin coverings. Because of the nomad's mobility, the art of rug making was exposed to other people, and in this way the craft passed to other cultures.

It is widely agreed that rug making found its highest and most elaborate skilled expression in Asian and Islamic cultures. Initially made strictly for utilitarian purposes, over the years the rug has become not just a useful floor covering, it has become an art form in its own right.

Rug making covers various techniques including braided, hooking, rag rugs and woven.

Quilling is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped and glued together to create decorative designs. The paper is wound around a quill to create a basic coil shape. These shaped coils are arranged to form flowers, leaves and various ornamental patterns similar to ironwork.

During the Renaissance French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items. In the 18th century quilling became popular in Europe where ladies of quality practised the art. Quilling also spread to the Americas and there are a few examples from Colonial times.

Today quilling is seeing a resurgence in popularity on every continent and in every walk of life. The craft has become increasingly popular due to the low cost of the material. It is used to decorate all sorts of cards, scrapbook pages and boxes. Quilling can be found in art galleries and is an art that is practised around the world.

August Birthstone - Peridot

My blog has been a bit of a miss over the last couple of weeks because of some health issues but I aim to get it back on track now - starting with a post about the birthstone for August - the Peridot.

The Peridot has become very popular in recent years, but it is actually a very old gemstone used in Egyptian jewellery as early as the 2nd millennium BC. The ancient Romans too were fond of this gemstone and esteemed its radiant green shine which does not change even in artificial light.

The Peridot is one of the few gemstones that comes in one colour only. The rich, green colour with the slight tinge of gold is caused by very fine traces of iron. The intensity of the colour depends on the amount of iron actually present. The colour itself can vary over all shades of yellowish green and olive, and even to a brownish green.

Pottery is the material from which potteryware is made, of which major types include earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. Pottery is made by forming the clay body into objects of a required shape and heating them to high temperatures in a kiln to induce reactions that lead to permanent changes including increasing their strength, and hardening and setting their shape.

The earliest pottery vessels found include those excavated from the Yuchanyan cave in Southern China, dated from 16,000 BCE, and those found in the Amur River basin in the Russian Far East, dated from 14,000 BCE. The invention of the Potter's Wheel in Mesopotamia sometime between 6,000 and 4,000 BCE revolutionised pottery production. Specialised potters were then able to meet the expanding needs of the world's first cities.

Origami from "ori" meaning "folding" and from "kami" meaning "paper" is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding which started in the 17th century AD and was then popularise outside Japan in the mid 1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.

There is much speculation as to the origin of origami. While Japan seems to have had the most extensive tradition, there is evidence of an independent tradition of paperfolding in China, as well as in Germany and Spain. In China traditional funerals included burning folded paper, most often representations of gold nuggets. It is not known exactly when this tradition started but it seems to have become popular during the Sung dynasty (905-11255 CE). The earliest evidence of paperfolding in Europe is a picture of a small paper boat in Tractatus from 1490.

In the early 1900s Akira Yoshizawa was responsible for a number of innovations such as wet folding and his work inspired a renaissance of the art form. During the 1980s a number of fo9lders started systematically studying the mathematical properties of folded forms which led to a steady increase in the complexity of origami models, which continued well into the 1990s, after which some designers started turning to simpler forms.

Sunday Theme - Cubic Zirconia

Cubic Zirconia has been widely recognised gemologically as the most important synthetic substitute for diamonds since it first began to be commercially manufactured in 1976.

Cubic Zirconia or CZ is actually the cubic crystalline form of zirconium dioxide. The synthesised material is hard, optically flawless and usually colourless but may be made in a variety of different colours.

Some of the key features distinguishing a cubic zirconia form a diamond, other than price of course are:

CZ has a rating of approx 8 on Mohs Hardness Scale vs a rating of 10 for diamonds
A CZ will weigh about 1.7 tomes more than a diamond of the same size
A manufactured CZ is virtually flawless whereas most diamonds will have some sort of defect
Some CZ gemstones are cut with facet shapes that differ from those typically used for diamonds
Only the rarest of diamonds are truly colourless whereas CZ can be made entirely colourless

Needlepoint is a form of counted thread embroidery in which yarn is stitched through a stiff open weave canvas. Although needlepoint may be worked in a variety of stitches, many needlepoint designs use only a simple tent stitch.

The roots of needlepoint go back thousands of years to the ancient Egyptians who used small slanted stitches to sew up their canvas tents. Some needlepoint was found in the cave of a Pharaoh who had lived 1500 years before Christ. Modern needlepoint descends from the canvas work in tent stitch that was a popular domestic craft in the 16th century.

While traditionally needlepoint has been done to create a solid fabric, more modern needlepoint incorporates open canvas, techniques which allow some of the unstitched, or lightly stitched canvas to show through. Needlepoint continues to evolve as stitchers use new techniques and threads, and add applique or found materials.

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of coloured glass, stone, or other materials. It may be a technique of decorative art, an aspect of interior decoration, or of cultural or spiritual significance.

The earliest known examples of mosaics made of different materials were found at a temple building in Mesopotamia and are dated to the 2nd half of the third millennium BC. Mosaics of the 4th century BC are found in the Macedonian city of Aegae and they enriched the floors of Hellenistic villas and Roman dwellings from Britain to Dura-Europos.

With the building of christian basilicas in the late 4th century, wall and ceiling mosaics were adapted for Christan uses. Christian mosaic art also flourished in Rome although the art gradually declined as conditions became more difficult in the Early Middle Ages.

Sunday Theme - Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

My theme this week is the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in honour of my gorgeous dogs. The dog pictured above is Sasha, my youngest dog, although not for too much longer. She is currently six months old and is so full of fun. She certainly keeps myself and my older dog, Amber, on our toes. Sasha and Amber will, in a few weeks time, by joined by a black and tan puppy, born last Sunday. I'm eagerly counting down the weeks until she is old enough to join us, and trying to come up with a name for her in the meantime.

A lapidary is an artist or artisan stones, minerals or gemstones into decorative items such as engraved gems, cabochons and faceted designs. In modern contexts the term is most closely associated with jewellery and decorative household items.

Apart from figurative carving there are three broad categories of lapidary arts. These are the procedures of tumbling, cabochon cutting and faceting. Most lapidary work is done using motorised equipment and resin or metal boned diamond tooling is successfully decreasing particle sizes until a polish is achieved. Older techniques, still popular with hobbyists, used bonded grinding wheels of silicon carbide, with only using a diamond tipped saw.

Knitting has no doubt earned its place as one of the most popular and well known crafts that there is. Knitting can be done by hand, for which there exists numerous styles and methods, or more recently by machine. Knitted products can come in a variety of different feels and textures by changing the size of the needles and the type of yarn used.

The work knit is derived from the word knot, thought to originate from the Dutch verb knutten, which is similar to the Old English cnyttan, to knot. One of the earliest known examples of knitting was cotton socks with stranded knit colour patterns found in Egypt from the end of the first millennium AD. Originally a male-only occupation, the first knitting trade guild was started in Paris in 1527. With the invention of the kitting machine knitting became a leisure activity.

Knitting has gone into and out of fashion many times in the last two centuries and at the turn of the 21st century it is enjoying a revival. The current revival is less about the 'make do and mend' attitude and more about making a statement of individuality.

Sunday Theme - Gold

Gold is a dense, soft, shiny metal and the most malleable metal known. Pure gold has an attractive bright yellow colour and lustre which, unlike other metals, does not oxidise in air and water. It has been a valuable and highly sought after precious metal for coinage, jewellery, and other arts since long before the beginning of recorded history.

Gold artifacts in the Balkans appear from the 4th millennium BC such as that found in the Varna Necropolis. Gold artifacts such as the golden hats and the Nebra disk appeared in central Europe from the 2nde millennium BC Bronze Age. Egyptian Hieroglyphs from as early as 2600 BC describe gold, which King Tushratta of the Mitanni claimed was more plentiful than dirt in Egypt. Gold is mentioned frequently in the Old Testament and was one of the gifts bought by the Magi in the New Testament.

The European exploration of the Americas was fuelled in no small part by reports of the gold ornaments displayed in great profusion by Native American peoples. The Aztecs regarded gold as literally the product of the gods. During the 19th century gold rushes occurred whenever large deposits of gold were discovered.

Because of its historically high value much of the gold mined throughout history is still in circulation in one form or another.

My latest pendant features the lovely stone - Snowflake Obsidian. It has been wire wrapped in sterling silver with the wires used to both enhance and decorate the stone.

The wires have been shaped around the stone with two wires on either side edging onto the stone for more effect. The wires then form a spiral above the stone, with wires coming from either side of the spiral then sweeping across the stone. These wires also create a heart shape around the central spiral.

So, there you have it - my Snowflake Obsidian and Sterling Silver Pendant.

The word jewellery is derived from the word jewel which was anglicised from the Old French "jouel" circa the 13th century. Jewellery is one of the oldest forms of body adornment, recently found 100,000 year old beads made from Narssarius shells are thought to be the oldest known jewellery.

The first signs of jewellery came from the people in Africa where early beads were made from shells. Outside of Africa the Cro-Magnons had crude necklaces and bracelets of bone, teeth, berries and stone. The first signs of established jewellery making in Early Egypt were around 3,500-5,000 years ago. The Egyptians preferred the luxury, rarity and workability of gold over other metals. In conjunction with gold Egyptians used coloured glass and precious gems.

The Greeks started using gold and gems in jewellery in 1600 BC although beads shaped as shells and animals were produced widely in earlier times.The Romans used a diverse range of materials for their jewellery. Although they used gold they sometimes used bronze or bone, and in earlier times, glass beads and pearl.

The modern jewellery movement began in the late 1940s with a renewed interest in artistic and leisurely pursuits. The advent of new materials such as plastics, PMC and colouring techniques has led to increased variety in styles. Artisan jewellery continues to grow both as a hobby and as a profession.

My Purple Jasper and Amethyst Wire Wrapped Earrings are another pair of earrings that I have made using offcut pieces of wire. This some time purple dyed Jasper has been treaded onto a central wire while two outer wires then encircle the bead, wrapped at either end. Loops are formed in the wires on either side of the wraps with the top loop used for the earring wire while the bottom loop has been used for suspending an amthyst bead.

I have created this style of earring before and really love it because I feel it has a real regency feel to it.

An illustration is a displayed visualisation such as a drawing, painting or photograph that is used to display sensual information (such as a story, poem or newspaper article) with a visual portrayal.

The earliest forms of illustration were prehistoric cave paintings. Before the invention of the printing press, books, such as Medieval Illuminated Manuscripts, were hand illustrated. Illustration has been used in China and Japan since the 8th century, traditionally by creating woodcuts to accompany writing. During the 15th century books illustrated with woodcut illustrations became available. The American Golden Age of Illustrations lasted from the 1880s until shortly after World War 1.

Today there is a growing interest in collecting and admiring original artwork that was used as illustrations in books, magazines, posters etc. In the visual art world illustrators have sometimes been considered less important in comparison with fine artists and graphic designers but illustration is now becoming a valued, popular and profitable art form.

A to Z of Crafts - H = Hardstone Carving

Hardstone carving is the general term for the carving for artistic purposes of semi-precious stones such as Jade, Rock Crystal, agate, onyx, jasper, and for an object made in this way. Normally the objects are small and the category overlaps with both jewellery and sculpture.

From the Neolithic period until about the 19th century such objects were among the most highly prized in a wide variety of cultures. The types of objects carved have included those ritual or religious purposes, engraved gems as signet rings and other kinds of seal, handles, belt hooks and similar items, vessels and purely decorative objects.

The art is very ancient going back to the Indus Valley Civilisation (3300-1300 BCE) and beyond. Chinese Jade carving can be found from the Neolithic Lianzhu culture (3400 - 2250 BCE) onwards. From the early civilizations of the near East descended the carving of vessels and small statues in Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and subsequent western art. One of the most notable producers of hard stone carving was Faberge who made his reputation with small hardstone figures of animals and people, and small vases with a few flowers.

A to Z of Crafts - G = Glass Blowing

Glass blowing is a glass forming technique that involves inflating molten glass into a bubble with the aid of a blowpipe or blow tube.

The technique of glass blowing was invented by the Phoenicians in approx 50BC. The earliest evidence of glass blowing comes from a collection of waste from a glass workshop dumped in a ritual bath in the old city of Jerusalem from 37 to 4 BC. Glass blowing was encouraged under Roman rule from the first century BC and this helped to see the art spread across the Roman Empire. Rome, the heart of the empire soon became a major glass blowing centre. A great variety of glass blown objects were produced, from perfume bottles, to table wear, to windows.

The glass blowing tradition was carried on in Europe from the Medieval period, through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The applicability of glass blowing became so widespread that glass was being blown in many parts of the world including China, Japan and the Islamic Lands.

The "Studio Glass Movement" began in 1962 when Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino held two workshops at the Toledo Museum of Art during which they started experimenting with melting glass in a small furnace and creating blown glass art. Littleton promoted the use of small furnaces in individual artists studios. This approach to glass blowing blossomed into a worldwide movement.

A Bit of Fancy

The star of my new wired bangle, Eudialyte and Garnet Fancy Wired Bangle, is most definitely the stone. I fell in love with the Eudialyte gemstone the minute I saw it with its gorgeous deep red markings. Eudialtye, as I discovered, is a fairly rare gemstone originally discovered in Greenland, but now more commonly mined in Russia.

I decided to set the stone into a bangle, and decided to use a fancy wire setting for the stone. Trialling various other gemstones, and even crystals against the Eudialyte I decided that the Garnets were the stone that produced the best match and that most complimented the Eudialyte.

I then used both sterling and 14k gold fill wire for the bangle which I then set the stone into. The wires that set the stone were then used to create spirals and swirls and also to add the garnets. The sides of the bangle were then shaped to give some balance against the focal.

July Birthstone - Ruby

For thousands of years, the ruby has been considered one of the most valuable gemstones on Earth. It has everything a precious stone should have: magnificent colour, excellent hardness and outstanding brilliance. In addition to that, it is an extremely rare gemstone, especially in its finer qualities.

The most important thing about this precious stone is its colour. It was not for no reason that the name 'ruby' was derived from the Latin word 'rubens', meaning 'red'. The red of the ruby is incomparable: warm and fiery. Two elements are associated with the symbolism of this colour: fire and blood, implying warmth and life for mankind. So ruby-red is not just any old colour, no, it is a hot, passionate, powerful colour. Like no other gemstone, the ruby is the perfect way to express powerful feelings.

Oceania - A Lampwork and Wire Art Necklace

This is a preview of my latest necklace - Oceania. It is a wire art necklace incorporating some artisan lampwork beads as well as Mother of Pearl, Swarovski Crystals and Sterling Silver Charms.

The inspiration for Oceania came from the three gorgeous lampwork beads made by Sally of Happily Ever Artist. Although intended as focal beads I knew the minute that I saw them that I wanted to showcase them all in the same necklace through the techniques of wire art. Each of the beads, although slightly different in size, are pretty much the same in terms of an oceanic theme. They all have blue swirls to represent waves and each has a small shell set on the surface of the bead.

I therefore tried to emulate the oceanic theme through the swirls, shapes and contours of my wire work. Swarovski crystals in varying shades of blue have been incorporated at various points throughout the wire work to further enhance the waves, eddies and currents that the wire represents. All the wire work uses sterling silver wire and various techniques have been used to build up the different sections.

On completing the bulk of the wire work I decided it needed something further. The depths of the ocean comes in many shades, from crystal clear to darker shades the deeper you go. I wanted the wire work to represent that so for the first time I decided to take the plunge into oxidising my silver. Having darkened the work I then spent hours polishing it back up to produce the clearer, shinier silver on the surface with the darker oxidised silver within the depths of the wire work.

My last embellishment to complete the oceanic theme was to add some ocean themed sterling silver charms. two shells, a starfish, a seahorse, and some dolphins. These were deliberately added after oxidisation to help them stand out more, and after all, however deep these things go in the sea they retain their colour.

So that is the design story behind my latest piece - Oceania - A Lampwork and Wire Art Necklace.
